Boca Barranca
A left that can break almost for 1,100 feet or 350 meters. Easy wave, ideal for longboarding, that breaks on a rivermouth.
Playa Escondida
Right point break that also works left. Fast and hollow, this spot is only accessible by boat.
Playa Jacó
Beach break with lefts and rights. Works better on high tide and can hold up to 5 feet. Easy wave ideal for beginners.
Roca Loca
A right point break that works only when the swell is up. Medium to high level of surfing.
Hermosa
Very consistent during all year round due to the exposure of this beach. Different surf spots on a 4-kilometer beach. For all surfing levels. The main spots are:
- Terrazas – a fast and hollow right that breaks over some visible rocks;
- Backyard – mainly left, a little bit more mellow and longer than Terrazas;
- Almendro – Can hold up more size than the above spots. Lefts and rights with a deeper bottom, therefore more mellow;
- La Curva – Even deeper bottoms therefore the wave has more size. Perfect lefts and rights;
- Tulin – The wave more to the south of this beach. Breaks in front of a rivermouth in deep waters forming a wave similar to a point break. Holds up more size than the other spots.
Esterillos
Beach break, good form of wave and very consistent. Similar conditions to Playa Hermosa.
Witche´s Rock
Lefts and rights, this beach is known for being one of the best beach breaks in the world. Very exposed to the swells, especially between April and October when the southern swells hit the coast. Nevertheless, during the summer period (December to April) the offshore winds blow constantly during all the day and the waves get as perfect as they can get! Hollow waves. Easier access by boat. For intermediate level.
Ollie´s Point (only accessible by boat)
Right point break breaking on a rivermouth, with hollow and fast waves that break on a rocky bottom. Perfect offshore winds during the summer months (December to April). Works better with a half-tide. Ideal for longboarding and appropriate for all surfing levels.
Playa Grande
A pointy beach break with lefts and rights that holds up swells up to double overhead. Very consistent. When the swells are small, the waves get really fun and easy to surf.
Avellanas
Four different spots on the same beach. Several lefts and rights in point and beach breaks where the wave perfection is incredible. Offshore winds especially during the summer season (December to April). Needs a little swell in order to get shoulder-high. For all surfing levels, ideal for beginners.
Playa Negra
Right point/reef break. Very consistent, perfect shape and strong, known as one of the best breaks in Costa Rica. Playa Negra starts being more interesting when the swells get some feet overhead. The wave can hold up to triple overhead, without closing out. Fun and easy when it is head high. This spot gets crowded easily when the waves are good.
Marbella
One of the most consistent beach breaks in the region. Fast and hollow lefts and rights. Usually not crowded. When the swells get bigger, it becomes a faster and harder wave, for a more demanding surf.
Ostional
Pretty unknown beach break but very consistent. Fast and usually big in size, this wave can get double or even triple overhead.
Santa Teresa
Beach and point breaks with perfect lefts and rights. Works better on low tide. Ideal for all surfing levels.
Malpaís
Several spots in this area:
-
El Carmen – a long right and a shorter left over a sandy bottom;
-
Playa Hermosa – Beach break with lefts and rights;
-
Playa de los Suecos – left with a fast drop. It gets more tubular with the offshore winds and when it gets head high;
-
Punta Barrigona – A left and long point break that needs a good swell in order to work.
Pavones
One of the longest lefts in the world, it can reach up to 0,6 miles or 1 kilometer, depending on the swell size. It woks in perfection with the southern swells that usually hit the coast between April and October. When it is good, it gets crowded easily. For all surfing levels.
Matapalo
A very powerful and fast right that works better on medium tide. It is more consistent and gets more swells than the other spots in the area, because it is more exposed. Better conditions with the western and south swells.
Backwash
A big but smooth right that breaks over a reef and ends in the middle of a spectacular bay. Ideal for longboarders. Not as consistent as Matapalo but, when it breaks it is incredible! Works better on medium to high tide and with the southwest swells.
Pan Dulce
Pan Dulce is the wave that is more protected from the swells in this area, making it ideal for beginners. When the conditions are good, a tubular wave breaks with different fast but mellow sections over a rocky bottom. It also works better with the middle to high tide and with the big swells from April to October.
THE CARIBBEAN

Salsa Brava
Point break located in Puerto Viejo de Limón. This region usually works during the summer months from December to March. Considered to be one of the heaviest waves in Costa Rica. Reef bottoms make the wave perfection, similar to the Hawaiian waves. The wave breaks on both sides, although it is best known for its fast and perfect right. Only for good surfing level.
Playa Cocles
Playa Cocles is located only 5 minutes from Salsa Brava and it is a consistent beach break with lefts and rights that break on a shorebreak. Good for all surfing levels.
